After having succeeded with panache in organising the World Junior Championships last August, Kenya is aiming for the next level. The Senior Worlds. And it is on the 2025 edition that the Kenyan authorities have positioned themselves.

Yesterday, the Kenyan bid was made official through Jackson Tuwei, the president of the Kenyan Federation (Athletics Kenya). An announcement that sounds like a confirmation of the will of Amina Mohammed, the Kenyan Minister of Sports. Who had already in September 2019, announced the candidacy of her country before the intervention of (World Athletics) open to the organization of the world event in turn on all continents.

In any case, Kenya is set for 2025. And it believes it has the best arguments with the success of its second world juniors. « We have hosted two very successful World Junior Championships at Kasarani Stadium in 2017 and August 2021, where a number of world and personal bests were achieved. We have learnt a lot from the organisation of these two events and now, logically, it is our turn to organise the flagship event, » said Jackson Tuwei, the president of the Kenyan Federation (Athletics Kenya).

The African continent has not yet had the chance to host the senior world championships since the first edition was held in Helsinki in 1983. It would therefore be a historic first for Africa if Kenya were to host the 2025 edition. The African candidate will have to deal with big competitors including Japan, host of the last Olympic Games. The senior world championships, which have been postponed from 2021 to 2022, will be held in Eugene, USA, while those of 2023 will be held in Budapest, Hungary.
