The world championship medallist was found dead at their home in Iten after being stabbed, allegedly by her husband, according to Athletics Kenya.

Kenya has lost a jewel, says the African nation’s athletics body. The 25-year-old Tirop broke the women’s 10km world record in Germany last month; finished fourth in the 5,000 metres at the Tokyo Olympics; also won bronze medals at the 2017 and 2019 world championships. Her career took off when she won the world cross-country title in 2015 at the age of 19 to become the second youngest champion in history.

In fact; the Elgeyo Marakwet County Police Chief, Tom Makori, said they were looking for Triop’s husband after his family reported that he phoned them crying and asking for God’s forgiveness for something he had done; the Associated Press news agency reported. Tom Makori, confirmed that Triop’s husband was a suspect after her disappearance. When police entered the house, they found Tirop’s body on the bed and there was a pool of blood on the floor, he said, and they saw that she had been stabbed in the neck, leading them to believe it was a knife wound, which caused her death. Her husband is still at large and preliminary investigations indicate that her husband is a suspect as he cannot be found. The police are trying to find her husband so that he can explain what happened to his wife. Her car, which was parked outside the house, has its windscreen and windows smashed, which could indicate a domestic dispute before she was killed.

Meanwhile; Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta also expressed his condolences over the murder of an athlete he described as a hero. « It is disturbing; quite unfortunate and very sad that we have lost a promising young athlete who had brought so much glory to our country, » he said. « It is even more painful that Agnes, a Kenyan heroine in every respect, has painfully lost her young life to a criminal act perpetrated by selfish and cowardly people. « I urge our law enforcement agencies to track down and apprehend the criminals responsible for Agnes’ murder so that they can face the full force of the law, » he added.

And also; agent Michel Boeting, who was a friend of Tirop’s, tweeted: « We will never see this majestic style of racing again. We will never see you raise your arms in celebration again. But worst of all; we will never see your beautiful smile again. You were royal. It was a pleasure to know you. »
