Ghana taekwondo's new leaders renew Korea Embassy partnership

Ghana’s newly elected taekwondo leadership has renewed the federation’s partnership with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Ghana, with both sides agreeing to strengthen cooperation and widen the sport’s reach at grassroots level.

Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF) president Frederick Lartey Otu led a delegation to meet Korean Ambassador Park Kyongsig at the embassy in Accra last Tuesday. The visit came after the federation’s recent elections, with Otu beginning a third term in charge.

Park reaffirmed the embassy’s willingness to provide technical assistance and more equipment to support taekwondo development across Ghana. He also described the sport as a link between Ghanaian and Korean culture, while welcoming its increasing appeal among young people and its role in youth development and mental well-being.

The relationship has a long sporting history. Korean instructors helped establish taekwondo in Ghana from the 1970s, and Korean support has continued through equipment provision and other assistance. That backing helped Ghana stage the taekwondo competition at the 2023 African Games. The renewed cooperation comes as Ghana and Korea prepare to mark 50 years of formal diplomatic relations in 2027.

Otu said the partnership would support the federation’s wider development programme. The GTF plans to begin an awareness campaign in five regions and increase the sport’s presence in schools. Support has been secured from the Ghana Education Service, while private schools are also part of the planned collaboration.

The meeting also turned attention to the 16th Korean Ambassador’s Taekwondo Championship, which is scheduled for August 29 at the Borteyman Sports Complex. Park expressed confidence that the event would produce another competitive contest, adding a public competition focus to the renewed institutional partnership.
