Jason Smith injury leaves Proteas unchanged for Namibia T20I tri-series

Jason Smith will miss South Africa’s T20I tri-series in Windhoek after an injury ruled him out of the tournament. The Proteas will face hosts Namibia and Zimbabwe between August 28 and September 6, but will travel without naming a replacement for the 31-year-old.

Smith is set to undergo further medical assessments to establish whether he can recover in time for South Africa’s three-match ODI series against Namibia, which starts on September 9. His withdrawal leaves the squad unchanged as it prepares to depart for Windhoek on Tuesday.

The absence removes an experienced player from a largely young white-ball group. Smith was part of South Africa’s squad at the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup and has made 11 T20 International appearances and three ODIs for the Proteas.

His omission could give uncapped all-rounders Duan Jansen and Eathan Bosch an opportunity to make their international debuts during the tri-series. Neither player has previously represented South Africa at senior international level in the supplied record.

The tournament will be South Africa’s first T20I assignment since the team reached the semi-finals of the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup under Aiden Markram. Bjorn Fortuin will captain the side in Namibia before the team turns to the ODI fixtures in September.

Smith’s injury adds to South Africa’s recent fitness concerns. Kagiso Rabada sustained a hamstring strain during winter training, while Senuran Muthusamy missed the South Africa A series against Bangladesh A because of a lower-back spasm. Neither Rabada nor Muthusamy was included in the Namibia touring squad, with several senior players being rested ahead of a home summer featuring eight Test matches.
