Terem Moffi targets Nigerian Bundesliga history after Hamburg move

Terem Moffi has completed a permanent move from OGC Nice to Hamburger SV, giving the Super Eagles striker a chance to pursue Nigerian records in the Bundesliga. The 27-year-old will wear Hamburg’s No. 9 shirt as the club begins life back in Germany’s top flight.

Moffi arrives after scoring 24 goals in 72 appearances for Nice since joining the French club in January 2023. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Porto, where he scored twice in 15 competitive matches. At international level, he has six goals in 23 senior appearances for Nigeria.

His clearest immediate target is Taiwo Awoniyi’s Nigerian record for goals in a single Bundesliga season. Awoniyi scored 15 times for Union Berlin in 2021/22, meaning Moffi would need 16 goals to establish a new mark. He is expected to lead Hamburg’s attack after the club’s promotion to the top flight.

Moffi also has a long-term national record in sight. Jonathan Akpoborie remains Nigeria’s leading scorer in Bundesliga history, having scored 61 goals for Hansa Rostock, Stuttgart and Wolfsburg. Moffi starts his German career without a league goal and would need 62 to move beyond that total.

Hamburg’s own history provides further benchmarks. Uwe Seeler’s 30-goal campaign in 1963/64 remains the club’s best single-season Bundesliga return, while Seeler’s 137 league goals for HSV are the club record. Kevin Keegan scored 17 in 1978/79, the highest single-season tally by a foreign Hamburg player, so 18 would take Moffi past that mark.

The Nigerian’s first Bundesliga assignment is away to Borussia Dortmund, following Hamburg’s DFB Cup first-round match at Verl. Beyond the early fixtures, the move gives Moffi the platform to chase records that range from a demanding first-season total to milestones requiring several productive years in Germany.
