Abdullah Mason seeks high-risk fight against William Zepeda

Abdullah Mason has indicated his desire to face WBC lightweight champion William Zepeda in his next outing. The 22-year-old WBO champion views a contest with Zepeda as a career-defining opportunity that would represent a significant increase in difficulty compared to his previous bouts.

Zepeda is coming off a dominant performance in Las Vegas last Saturday, where he secured a wide 12-round decision victory over Lamont Roach. During that contest, the 30-year-old demonstrated his high-volume style by throwing 884 punches and landing 218. His ability to maintain constant pressure and throw continuous combinations presents a stylistic challenge for Mason.

Mason's recent championship fights have required significant resilience. In his title win against Sam Noakes, he struggled with constant pressure and was forced to box from the outside during the later rounds. His first defense against Albert Bell on July 4 was also a difficult encounter, as Mason had to fight through a standstill period before securing a 12th-round stoppage.

The prospect of facing Zepeda also raises questions regarding Mason's defensive durability. In a 2024 fight against Yohan Vasquez, Mason was knocked down twice before recovering to win by a second-round knockout. Zepeda's relentless pace could test these vulnerabilities, as he rarely stops attacking after landing single shots.

Mason believes his recent development will allow him to implement new skills against the WBC champion.
