AFCON 2027: Kenya shares latest Kasarani Stadium renovation update

Kenya has issued an update on the renovation of Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, as preparations continue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The 45,000-capacity stadium is being upgraded for the tournament, which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the work is intended to bring the venue in line with international standards. The latest update was accompanied by images showing progress at the Nairobi complex, where the redevelopment extends beyond the temporary improvements completed before the 2025 African Nations Championship.

A hybrid Bermuda-grass pitch is being installed, along with a modern drainage system. The stadium’s seats have been replaced, while the VIP and VVIP areas have also been improved. The spectator canopy is 99 per cent complete.

The completed facility is scheduled to include floodlights rated at 2,000 lux, animation screens and Video Assistant Referee equipment. The plans also cover automated ticketing, upgraded media facilities and new changing rooms, adding operational improvements to the work inside the main arena.

Two training pitches within the Kasarani complex are included in the wider renovation programme. The upgrades are designed to provide the facilities required for a major continental tournament, with the stadium and its surrounding areas being prepared as part of Kenya’s AFCON 2027 responsibilities.

The work is not limited to Nairobi. Eldoret’s Kipchoge Keino Stadium is also being upgraded, with its planned capacity set at 15,671 seats. That project is aimed at meeting international football standards, while the venue’s reopening is expected to restore sporting activity after its closure.
