Akonnor faults Gor Mahia errors after 3-1 FKF Super Cup loss

Tusker beat Gor Mahia 3-1 in Sunday’s FKF Super Cup at Nyayo Stadium, leaving Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor unhappy with the defending that shaped the result. Tusker scored in the 33rd and 35th minutes, while a 38th-minute own goal briefly reduced the deficit before the decisive fourth goal arrived in the 54th minute.

Francis Oduor opened the scoring for Tusker before Eugene Ikutwa doubled the advantage with a long-range effort two minutes later. Ikutwa then turned the ball into his own net, offering Gor Mahia a route back into the contest. Ian Simiyu restored Tusker’s two-goal lead with a diving header after the interval.

Akonnor said repeated individual errors have become a concern for the Premier League champions and warned that the problem must be addressed quickly. He also felt Gor Mahia struggled to create clear chances and were particularly vulnerable when defending.

The coach rejected the idea that his starting team had been selected merely for experimentation. Humphrey Katasi, formerly of AFC Leopards, started in goal, while Ugandan forward Dennis Omedi also began the match. Akonnor maintained that the players selected were trusted options and that Gor Mahia had approached the fixture with the intention of winning their first silverware of the 2026/27 season.

The defeat came against a Tusker side that finished 10th in the 2025 FKF Premier League with 45 points from 34 matches. Tusker’s league record was 13 wins, six draws and 15 defeats, with 27 goals scored and 32 conceded. Their five most recent listed results before this match included three defeats, one draw and one win.

Both clubs now turn towards league and continental commitments. Gor Mahia will compete in the CAF Champions League, while Tusker are set to play in the CAF Confederation Cup. Tusker’s next listed league fixture is away to Ulinzi Stars on August 30, 2026.
