All Blacks coaches face pressure to stop Springbok maul

All Blacks forwards coaches Jason Ryan and Neil Barnes are under significant pressure to neutralise the South African maul. Former New Zealand forwards coach John Plumtree believes the technical ability to stop the Springboks' driving maul is a primary requirement for the upcoming series.

Plumtree noted that allowing South Africa to secure ball in the middle or back of the lineout makes the New Zealand defence vulnerable. He suggested that the All Blacks must allow the Springboks the front of the maul before attempting to hammer them and keep them contained.

Scrum stability is another critical factor for the New Zealand coaching staff. Plumtree warned that if the Springboks dominate the scrum, it provides South Africa with an easy way to exit their own territory or gain attacking positions. A scrum penalty in the All Blacks' half could lead to three points or a lineout situation that forces New Zealand to defend the maul.

To prepare, Plumtree suggested that training sessions should focus heavily on maul defence and scrummaging. He also recommended that the All Blacks should attempt to turn the momentum by using their own driving maul to put the South African pack under pressure.

Achieving parity in the set-piece is essential for the New Zealand backline to operate effectively. Plumtree stated that if the forwards can match the Springboks, players such as Cam Roigard and Ruben Love will have the opportunity to create opportunities.
