Amy Hunt wins 100m gold at European Championships in Birmingham

Amy Hunt secured her first senior individual title at the European Championships in Birmingham on August 10. The Briton clocked 11.00 seconds to take the 100m gold medal at the Alexander Stadium.

Hunt demonstrated her characteristic closing speed to overcome a slow start. She sat in seventh place after the first 20 metres and was in third place with only 30 metres remaining. However, her momentum over the final 50 metres allowed her to overtake the field and finish first.

Ewa Swoboda of Poland took the silver medal with a time of 11.02 seconds. Belgium's Delphine Nkansa claimed the bronze medal, setting a personal best of 11.06 seconds. The defending champion, Dina Asher-Smith, finished fifth in 11.10 seconds, a time equal to her season's best.

This victory marks a significant progression for the 24-year-old. Two years ago at the 2024 European Championships in Rome, Hunt was recovering from quadriceps surgery and finished seventh in the 100m final. Since that period, the world 200m silver medallist and Commonwealth silver medallist has added major global medals to her career.

Earlier on the opening night of the championships, Norway won gold in the mixed 4x400m relay. The Norwegian team, led by 400m hurdles champion Karsten Warholm, set a championship record of 3:09.62. Henriette Jaeger, the fastest 400m runner in Europe, helped secure the victory.

Norway finished ahead of Great Britain, who clocked 3:10.47, and the Netherlands, who finished in 3:10.77.
