Andre Ayew responds to GFA presidency talk ahead of 2027 vote

Former Ghana captain Andre Ayew has responded to speculation that he could seek the Ghana Football Association presidency, saying his main concern is the progress of the country’s football rather than confirming a campaign.

Ayew discussed the subject during an appearance on the Obi One Podcast, hosted by former Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi in Accra on Sunday. He acknowledged that some people have mentioned him as a possible future leader of Ghana football, but did not say that he would stand in the election.

The next GFA presidential and executive council elections are scheduled for 2027. Kurt Okraku has led the association since 2019, meaning Ayew’s comments come with the current administration still in office and the next vote ahead.

The 36-year-old remains without a club after ending his spell with Dutch side NAC Breda in May. He has stayed in Ghana, where he continues to train while talks take place with three clubs over a possible move abroad. His playing future therefore remains unresolved as he considers his next step.

Ayew has been one of Ghana’s most prominent football figures. He captained the Black Stars and appeared for the national team at several major international tournaments, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. That international experience has placed him among the former players whose influence extends beyond the pitch.

For now, Ayew has stopped short of linking that experience to a formal bid for the GFA presidency. His comments leave open the possibility of a future role in football administration while making clear that the stated priority is the wider development of Ghana’s game.
