Archie Moore stops Harold Johnson in 14th round to retain title

Archie Moore retained his light heavyweight world title with a 14th-round stoppage of Harold Johnson on August 11, 1954. The veteran champion secured the victory at Madison Square Garden after trailing for much of the contest.

Johnson, who was 26 years old and 14 years younger than Moore, controlled the early and middle stages of the fight. He used movement, counterpunching, and a consistent jab to frustrate the champion. The challenger even scored a knockdown in the 10th round with a right hand behind the ear. Although Moore rose quickly, referee Ruby Goldstein continued the count despite the championship rules waiving the automatic eight-count.

Heading into the final stages, Johnson appeared to be on the verge of winning. Two officials had the challenger ahead on the scorecards after 13 rounds. However, Moore began to turn the tide late in the 13th round by hurting Johnson, and he maintained this pressure into the final frame.

In the 14th round, Moore launched an attack that forced Johnson into his corner and eventually sent him to the canvas. Johnson managed to stand up, but he was severely hurt. Moore continued to punch him along the ropes until Goldstein stopped the fight at 56 seconds of the round.

This victory extended Moore's winning streak to 19 fights. The result concluded a five-fight rivalry between the two men, marking the first time their meetings involved Moore's world title. Johnson had previously defeated Moore once in their four earlier encounters. Following this win, Moore moved toward a fight with heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano the following year.
