Brian Wahinya welcomes new competition at KCB Rugby

KCB Rugby fly half Brian Wahinya has expressed his enthusiasm regarding the arrival of new players at the club. The competition for places brought by Nygel Amaitsa, Ben Kihiti, and David Nyangige is viewed by the playmaker as a way to improve individual performance through teamwork and regular feedback.

Wahinya, who joined the bankers from Kenyatta University's Blak Blad in 2021, stated that he does not feel threatened by the new arrivals. Instead, he intends to use his experience to help the newcomers integrate into the club's system and feel part of the family. He noted that many of the new players were already known to him prior to their move to KCB.

Since joining the club five years ago, Wahinya has been a central figure in several successful campaigns. His achievements include winning the 2023 National Sevens Circuit (NSC) Most Valuable Player award, the 2022 and 2023 Impala Floodlit Tournament, and the 2025 NSC. He is also a regular member of the Kenya national 15s team, the Simbas, participating in the Elgon Cup, Africa Cup, and Rugby World Cup qualifiers.

The fly half is preparing for the upcoming Kabeberi 7s at the RFUEA Grounds this weekend. KCB aims to recover from a difficult performance at the Dala 7s in Kisumu, where they were eliminated in the main cup quarter-finals by Quins. That result saw the bankers lose their Dala 7s title to Kabras Sugar, who defeated Menengai Oilers 17-5 in the final.

Wahinya believes the team has the opportunity to extend their legacy at the Kabeberi 7s, a tournament they have dominated for the last four years. He expects intense competition from all participating teams as they fight for silverware.

Amid preparations, Wahinya attended the unveiling of a Ksh 2.5 million sponsorship from HACO Industries for the Simbas at the company's Kasarani headquarters on Wednesday. He welcomed the investment, noting that it provides a boost to the 15s game and demonstrates trust in the team's direction. This follows a previous sponsorship of Ksh 1.5 million provided to the national side two years ago.
