Bulawayo Athletics Board aims for two monthly events
The Bulawayo Athletics Board is working to host two competitions every month to ensure athletes have regular opportunities to compete and improve.
The Bulawayo Athletics Board (Bab) is working toward a target of hosting at least two athletics competitions every month. Chairman Watson Madanyika noted that while achieving this ambitious schedule has been difficult, the board remains committed to the goal.
Madanyika stated that regular competition is essential for athlete improvement and keeping the sport active throughout the year. The board aims to provide consistent opportunities for elite, junior, and emerging competitors to test their progress against others.
Currently, the board is focusing on the sixth edition of the White City Stars Open Track and Field Championships. Organized by the White City Stars Athletics Club, the event is scheduled for 26 September at White City Stadium. It is expected to attract participants from various provinces, schools, and clubs.
The upcoming championships will feature a variety of disciplines. The programme includes the long jump and several running events: the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, Mile, 3,000m, and 5,000m. Relay races for the 4x100m and 4x400m are also included.
Madanyika expressed a desire to see the White City Stars event grow into a significant fixture on the local athletics calendar. He believes such events demonstrate the quality of athletics in Bulawayo and show the results of collaboration between different stakeholders in the sport.
Staging frequent meets presents logistical and financial challenges. Unlike other sports, athletics requires significant planning regarding officials, facilities, and the resources necessary to attract competitors and make the meets worthwhile.
