Bulawayo to host tournament and tombstone unveiling for Lucky Dube

Bulawayo will host a football tournament and a tombstone unveiling ceremony next Saturday to honour the late Zimbabwe national team goalkeeper Lucky Dube. The event serves as a remembrance for the former shot-stopper who passed away in 1997 at the age of 34.

His widow, Mrs Sekani Dube, confirmed that the family has organised the day to celebrate his life. The morning will begin with the unveiling of his tombstone, followed by a social football tournament in Mzilikazi. Four teams will compete in the tournament: Mzilikazi United, Barbourfields Stars, Madamara FC, and Wolves of Nguboyenja. These clubs were selected due to Dube's roots in Mzilikazi and his connections to the Nguboyenja area.

Dube's footballing journey began in the youth ranks of Highlanders before he moved to Bulawayo Wanderers. His talent led to his selection for Zimbabwe's first Under-20 national team following independence in 1980. He later played for Bata Power and joined Dynamos in 1983, where he succeeded Japhet Mparutsa. During his time with the Harare-based club, he secured multiple trophies before returning to Bulawayo in 1989.

His legacy continues through his sons, Thabo and Nhlanhla, who both pursued football careers. Nhlanhla played for Zimbabwe Saints and Highlanders, while Thabo played for Rutz Celtics, helping their Division Two side achieve promotion to Division One.

Dynamos chairman Vincent Chawonza described Dube as an outstanding servant and a legend of the club. Former teammate and national goalkeeper Japhet Mparutsa also paid tribute to Dube, noting his professionalism and natural talent. Mparutsa, who was a contemporary of Dube in the Under-20 side, stated that competing against him helped improve his own performance.
