Bulls open talks with Japan-based Springbok hooker Malcolm Marx

The Vodacom Bulls have made contact with Japan-based Springbok hooker Malcolm Marx as they consider bringing the experienced forward back to South Africa. Marx, 32, has been with Kubota Spears since 2021 and remains under contract with the Japanese club.

The Bulls are examining a possible move to Loftus Versfeld, although formal negotiations have not begun. Those discussions are expected to follow as the Pretoria side assesses whether it can put forward an offer strong enough to secure Marx’s return.

Kubota Spears want to keep the hooker, meaning the Bulls are likely to face a difficult and expensive recruitment process. Marx would also need to decide that a move home is attractive after five seasons in Japan.

The need for added depth at hooker is becoming clearer for the Bulls. Junior Springbok Esethu Mnebelele is due to join the Sharks later this year, leaving Johan Grobbelaar, Juann Else and Juandré Schoeman as the main options listed for the position. Jan-Hendrik Wessels and Marco van Staden can also provide cover.

A possible advantage for the Bulls is the existing connection between Marx and head coach Johan Ackermann. Ackermann was in charge of the Lions when Marx began establishing himself at senior level, and Marx spent five seasons with the Johannesburg side from 2014 to 2019 before moving overseas.

The Bulls’ interest places Marx at the centre of their plans to reinforce the position, but the move remains at an exploratory stage. Contact has been made, while the Japanese club’s desire to retain him and the likely cost of a deal remain significant factors.
