Chesebe, Chebet and Kidake extend Kenya’s World Masters haul in Daegu

Kenya added three medals at the World Masters Athletics Championships in Daegu, with Sylvia Chesebe and Betty Chebet winning gold and Grace Kidake taking silver. Chesebe’s victory became Kenya’s third gold of the championships, extending the country’s productive opening week in South Korea.

Chesebe won the W35 800m on Monday to claim the latest gold for the Kenyan team. Her result added another middle-distance title to a campaign that has already produced podium finishes in race walking, long-distance running and field events.

Kidake finished second in the W40 800m, giving Kenya another medal on the track. The silver followed Chesebe’s success and strengthened the team’s presence in the women’s veteran middle-distance categories.

Chebet completed the day’s Kenyan medal haul in the field. She won the W35 discus throw, adding a gold from a technical event to the country’s medals in running and race walking.

Kenya’s first two gold medals in Daegu came on Saturday. Eric Sikuku won the M50 10km race walk in 49:35, before Peter Wanjiru took the M40 10,000m title in 31:14. Chesebe’s 800m victory therefore moved Kenya to three gold medals, while Chebet’s win added a fourth gold to the team’s overall tally.

The championships run from August 22 to September 3, with Kenyan athletes competing across track, road and field disciplines. The latest results continue the form shown at the national selection trials in May and give Kenya a strong medal position as the Daegu programme progresses.
