Conor Benn targets stoppage of Ryan Garcia in final welterweight bout

Conor Benn intends to secure a stoppage victory against Ryan Garcia during their WBC welterweight title fight on September 12. The British fighter stated his intention to end the contest before the final bell rings in Las Vegas.

This upcoming match represents Benn's final appearance at the 147-pound limit. He has not competed at welterweight since 2022, having previously moved up to higher weights for two bouts against Chris Eubank Jr. Benn indicated that winning the world title will facilitate his move to higher weight classes, including 154, 160, and 168 pounds.

The return to the welterweight division presents a significant physical challenge for Benn. He noted that the weight cut is brutal and difficult, especially since he has not made the 147-pound limit in four years. During his 150-pound catchweight fight against Regis Prograis last April, Benn appeared visibly drained during the weigh-in process.

Benn expressed that Garcia's current activities do not concern him as he focuses on his training. He remains committed to achieving a victory through a stoppage. While the weight cut is a major hurdle, Benn believes capturing the WBC belt will justify the difficulty of the camp.

Success at higher weights remains uncertain for Benn. While he can handle domestic opposition, the elite level presents significant obstacles. Potential future challenges include Jaron Ennis, Vergil Ortiz Jr., Sebastian Fundora, Israil Madrimov, Carlos Adames, Yoenli Hernandez, and middleweight champion Erislandy Lara.

Benn's previous performance against Regis Prograis showed he had to work hard for a win, even though Prograis was fighting above his natural weight. If Benn struggles in the heavier divisions, he may eventually need to return to the welterweight class to find a path back to title contention.
