CRRA seeks to form rugby club at Ankaful Maximum Security Prison

The Central Region Rugby Association (CRRA) has initiated talks with the Ghana Prisons Service to create a rugby club at the Ankaful Maximum Security Prison. The project aims to use the sport as a tool for the development and rehabilitation of inmates.

A delegation from the CRRA, including Chairman Clement Dennis and Public Relations Officer Peter Caesar Kwegyir Aggrey, met with Ghana Prisons Service officials at the facility. During the meeting, the group presented a rugby ball to the officials to signal the start of the initiative. The delegation held discussions with DDP Joseph Asabre and DSP Philip Asomani regarding the implementation of the programme within the prison.

Clement Dennis stated that rugby can assist in the rehabilitation process and help identify sporting talent. He noted that the association's vision is to use the game to foster discipline, uncover talent, and create new opportunities. He also expressed that the sport could serve as a way to bring various security services together.

The proposed club is intended to allow inmates to learn and play rugby while encouraging teamwork and discipline. This move is part of a broader strategy by the CRRA to involve security agencies in organized sports.

The association plans to establish a Central Region Security Services Rugby Championship. This competition would include the Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Immigration Service, and the Ghana Armed Forces. The CRRA indicated that this tournament could eventually expand to include security services from other nations.

The CRRA and the Ghana Prisons Service are expected to collaborate on the subsequent stages of establishing the club and starting regular rugby activities at the Ankaful Maximum Security Prison.
