Devin Haney and Jack Catterall in talks for October 3 fight

Devin Haney and Jack Catterall are in advanced negotiations to fight on October 3. The proposed matchup would see Haney defend his WBO welterweight title against the British southpaw.

These discussions progressed after Haney's negotiations with Liam Paro failed due to the Australian fighter's financial requirements. If the deal is finalized, Catterall will move away from a mandatory fight against WBA champion Rolly Romero. The WBA had previously ordered Romero to face Catterall within 180 days following Catterall's recent title win.

Catterall enters the negotiations as the WBA Regular welterweight champion. He secured that belt on May 23 in Egypt by defeating Shakhram Giyasov via unanimous decision. During that contest, Catterall scored a knockdown in the first round and won with scores of 119-108, 118-109, and 116-111.

The potential bout creates a unique situation at the 147-pound weight class. While both men hold championship belts, the fight would not be a full unification. Haney holds the WBO title, while Rolly Romero remains the primary WBA champion.

Catterall has sought a fight with Haney since their time competing at light welterweight. This opportunity follows his move to the welterweight division and his first world title victory. Choosing this path would mean prioritizing the Haney fight over the existing WBA title route against Romero.
