Enugu to host 2nd City International Marathon on August 29, 2026
The Enugu City International Marathon returns in 2026, featuring a 42km race and a 10km fun run to boost tourism and economic growth in the state.
The second edition of the Enugu City International Marathon is scheduled to take place on August 29, 2026. The event aims to use sports to stimulate tourism, create employment, and increase youth involvement within the state.
Organized by Nilayo Sports Management with support from the Enugu State Government, the marathon is being developed as a Gold Label-style race. The organizers intend to attract elite runners from across Africa and the international community while encouraging mass participation. The 42km marathon will begin at 6:30 AM from ShopRite on Abakaliki Road, passing through various landmarks in the city.
A 10km fun run is also part of the program, starting at 8:30 AM from the Chris Tee Petrol Station on CIC Road and finishing at Opara Square by 12:30 PM. This segment is designed for families and fitness enthusiasts. The course is intended to highlight the culture and heritage of Enugu to participants and spectators.
Substantial cash prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers in the 42km elite categories. The state government expects the influx of athletes from Nigeria and the diaspora to increase demand for local services, including hotels, food, transport, and other businesses during the week of the race.
Nilayo Sports Management has stated that preparations for security, medical support, logistics, and the recruitment of elite athletes are in advanced stages. The long-term objective is to make the Enugu City Marathon a permanent part of the global running calendar and establish a standard for road races in the region.
This initiative is part of a broader vision to position Enugu as a primary destination for sports, tourism, and business in the South-East. The state is utilizing the event to drive investment and create new opportunities through sports.
