Esiovwa-Thompson wins Nigeria's first Commonwealth fencing gold

Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson secured Nigeria's first gold medal at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos. The 16-year-old won the men’s U-23 epee title by defeating India's Lokesh Vemani with a 15–5 scoreline in the final.

This victory marks the first time a Nigerian has won gold at an international fencing event or earned a medal at this specific tournament. Esiovwa-Thompson, who recently switched his allegiance from England to Nigeria, competed at the Rugby School Nigeria in Atlantic City.

His route to the championship was marked by several dominant performances. After finishing unbeaten in Pool 4 to earn a bye into the round of 16, he defeated South Africa's Karabo Mathobela 15–7. He followed this with a 15–2 victory over India's Shivaansh Kapoor in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals, Esiovwa-Thompson overcame Ashwini Shaurya of India with a 15–11 win to reach the final. Shaurya and India's Godwin Natarajan both finished the competition with bronze medals.

Before representing Nigeria, the teenager had achieved international success in other categories. His previous accolades include a gold medal in the U-13 boys’ epee at the 2022 Wratislavia Challenge and a bronze in the cadet men’s epee team event.

Other results from the championships saw England's Oliver Strange win the men's U-23 foil gold after beating India's Manoj Patil. Singh Sanasam of India and Thomas James of England earned bronze medals in that event.
