Ethan Strand wins Diamond League 1500m in 3:30.77 in Silesia
Ethan Strand claimed his first Diamond League 1500m victory in Silesia, beating Cole Hocker and Jakob Ingebrigtsen in 3:30.77.
Ethan Strand won the men’s 1500m in 3:30.77 at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in Silesia, securing his first Diamond League victory. Phanuel Koech finished second in 3:31.14, with Olympic champion Cole Hocker third in 3:31.16 and Jakob Ingebrigtsen fourth in 3:31.19.
The American was 11th at the 800m mark but moved through the field during the closing stages. He produced the fastest finish of the race to overtake the leading group and take the win, completing a major breakthrough against two of the event’s leading names.
Ingebrigtsen had controlled much of the final lap after leading at the bell and remaining in front down the back straight. The Norwegian could not hold the position as Strand came through in the closing metres, while Hocker also missed out on the top two by a narrow margin.
For Ingebrigtsen, the race was his return to Diamond League 1500m competition after last competing in the event at the Tokyo meeting in September. His fourth-place finish came behind Koech and Hocker, who were separated by just 0.02 seconds at the line.
Strand’s victory highlighted the closing speed that carried him from the lower half of the field at 800m to the lead at the finish. His winning time was 0.37 seconds quicker than Koech’s, while the four leading athletes all finished within 0.42 seconds of one another.
The 1500m was part of a record-setting programme at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial, where seven meeting records and two world leads were recorded. Strand’s result stood out among those performances as he collected the first Diamond League win of his career.
