European Athletics Championships: Italy and Britain lead medal race

The upcoming European Athletics Championships in Birmingham will see a competitive battle for the top of the medal standings. Great Britain aims to improve on the 13 medals and four golds they secured in Italy in 2024, with medal prospects across approximately 20 events.

Other nations positioned to vie for the most successful status include Germany, France, Norway, and the Netherlands. Great Britain's historical peak occurred in Zurich in 2014, when they achieved 23 medals, including a record 12 golds. The addition of mixed relays to the programme provides a further opportunity for the home nation to increase their tally.

In the sprint disciplines, the championship best for the 100m stands at 9.95 seconds, a mark shared by Zharnel Hughes and Lamont Marcell Jacobs. Hughes also holds a previous championship gold in the event. In the 400m, historical gold medalists include Martyn Rooney and Hudson-Smith, with the latter having secured titles in 2018 and 2022.

Middle and long-distance events feature several prominent contenders. In the 1500m, the championship record is held by legends such as Sebastian Coe and Steve Ovett. The 5000m saw Mo Farah secure three gold medals between 2010 and 2014. For the men's 10,000m, Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen is a key figure, while the women's 800m features a world record of 1:53.28 set by Jarmila Kratochvilová.
