European U19 Boxing Championships crowns 10 gold-medal nations
Russia led the European U19 Boxing Championships in Serbia with eight golds, while nine other nations also won titles across 20 divisions.
Ten nations won gold at the European U19 Boxing Championships in Loznica, Serbia, where Russia finished first in the medal standings with eight titles. England ranked second after taking four gold medals, one silver and three bronze medals during the eight-day event from August 13 to 21.
The championships featured 333 bouts across 20 weight categories, with 353 boxers representing 35 countries. At least one medal went to athletes from 25 nations, while competitors from 15 countries reached a final. Russia and Turkey entered the largest teams, each sending 20 boxers, followed by Poland and Ukraine with 19 apiece.
Russia’s champions included Kristina Borisenko at W54kg, Ekaterina Frolova at W80kg, Samira Itonieva at W80+kg and Kirill Korshakov at M85kg. Prokhor Startsev added the M80kg title after beating Italy’s Tiberio Nocadello, while Anastasia Golunova won at W57kg. Russia’s overall performance put it clearly ahead of England on the final medal table.
England’s four titles came through Rueben Huczmann at M55kg, Lily Bassett at W57kg, Albe Dowell at M90kg and Yashua Flemming at M65kg. Dowell recovered from a difficult start to defeat Russia’s Temirsultan Temirsultanov, while Flemming won at his first European Championships by overcoming Belarus’ Bahdan Shashlykou. Bassett defeated Ireland’s Ellen Joyce and secured a fourth European title.
Ireland, Ukraine, Serbia, Italy, Georgia, Croatia, Germany and Slovakia made up the other gold-medal nations. Ireland’s Kristian Jubani and John Maher won at M50kg and M70kg respectively, while Germany’s Justin Kiz claimed M75kg. Ukraine’s Oleksandr Khomenko took the M90+kg title, and Croatia collected two women’s championships through Lorena Horvat and Bella Zueva.
Italy’s Daniele Fabi won M60kg, Slovakia’s Karolina Kollarova took W60kg, and Serbia also secured two titles during the competition. The championships served as a development event for Europe’s young amateur boxers, with World Boxing scheduled to stage its own U19 World Boxing Championships in Budva, Montenegro, from October 14 to 27, 2026.
