Garcia backs Benavidez to beat Usyk in possible heavyweight fight

Trainer Robert Garcia believes David Benavidez can defeat Oleksandr Usyk if the reported heavyweight fight goes ahead, despite the risks.

Robert Garcia believes David Benavidez has the ability to defeat Oleksandr Usyk if the two meet at heavyweight. The respected trainer also accepts that the proposed contest would carry significant risks for Benavidez.

Garcia’s view comes as discussions continue around a possible fight between the two champions. He feels Benavidez should move directly into the Usyk challenge rather than wait for another assignment, and considers the Mexican capable of winning the contest.

The matchup would have appeared unrealistic only a few years ago. Usyk became undisputed heavyweight champion in May 2024, while Benavidez had not competed beyond super-middleweight at that stage.

Benavidez has since added major achievements in two heavier divisions. He won world honours at light heavyweight before moving to cruiserweight, where he stopped WBA and WBO champion Gilberto Ramirez inside six rounds in May to claim those titles.

His next appearance could come in December against Michal Cieslak. The vacant WBC belt may be at stake, although talks about a possible meeting with Usyk on a Cinco de Mayo date next year have also increased the significance of Benavidez’s immediate plans.

Usyk relinquished his heavyweight championships after his controversial fight with Rico Verhoeven. He said he had one final bout remaining, with former heavyweight title challenger Deontay Wilder initially expected to be the opponent. Benavidez is now being considered for that opportunity.

Garcia’s assessment adds to the attention around a fight that would place Benavidez against one of the most accomplished heavyweights of his era. Boxing legend Mike Tyson has also shared a view on the potential contest, although the supplied details do not specify his prediction.
