Gary Antonio Russell wins WBA interim crown on 119-108 cards

Gary Antonio Russell claimed the WBA interim super bantamweight world title after defeating Víctor Santillán by unanimous decision at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The American completed the 12-round fight with a knockdown in the final round and secured wide verdicts of 118-109, 119-108 and 119-108.

Russell established control early and maintained it throughout the contest. Fighting from the southpaw stance, he used his jab to manage the distance while his movement prevented Santillán from setting the pace he wanted.

Santillán, a Dominican contender, repeatedly tried to get close and work on Russell’s body. Those attempts were met by quick counters and Russell’s ability to move away from danger, leaving Santillán unable to sustain his attacks.

The American’s accuracy became more influential as the fight progressed. Santillán’s efforts to force an opening created defensive gaps, and Russell responded with clean combinations, particularly with his head shots.

Russell stayed composed through the closing rounds and continued to land with precision. The decisive final round added the knockdown to an already commanding performance and confirmed the distance between the two fighters on the judges’ cards.

The victory makes Russell the WBA’s interim champion at 122 pounds. His performance in Las Vegas was built on control, speed, defence and sustained accuracy rather than an exchange-heavy contest, while Santillán finished without finding the breakthrough he needed.
