George Afriyie questions source of GFA’s GHC1m Ghana PL payment

Former Ghana Football Association vice-president George Afriyie has questioned where the GHC1 million promised to each Ghana Premier League club will come from. The payment was announced ahead of the new season by GFA president Kurt Okraku.

Okraku made the announcement at the Association’s 32nd Ordinary Congress on Thursday, August 20, 2026. The meeting took place at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram, where clubs were told they would receive the same amount that was provided to each team last season.

Last season’s support came from the government through the Adesa Productions Limited broadcast agreement. Afriyie said club administrators should have examined the relevant GFA documents and sought an explanation before attending the congress.

Speaking on Sporty Breakfast, the former vice-president said clubs such as Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko should have asked the GFA president to identify the source of the funds. He also questioned whether the latest payment was government-backed and why the government had not been publicly credited if it was financing the support.

Afriyie said the GFA had still not explained the origin of the money to the sporting public. He linked the issue to the Association’s stated commitment to transparency, arguing that the funding announcement had not been matched by sufficient financial disclosure.

The GHC1 million package is therefore at the centre of a governance question before the new Ghana Premier League season. While clubs received an equivalent amount last season through the government-backed broadcast arrangement, the source of this year’s promised payment remains unclear in the information made public by the GFA.
