Ghana's Black Queens intensify training for Malawi quarter-final

The Black Queens have increased their training intensity in Rabat ahead of their WAFCON 2026 quarter-final match against Malawi this Sunday. The Ghanaian senior women's national team is focusing on preparations to secure a spot in the semi-finals.

Ghana finished the group stage in second place in Group D. Their campaign included a 2-0 win against Cape Verde, a 1-0 defeat to Cameroon, and a 1-1 draw with Mali. They will now face a Malawi side that progressed from Group C as runners-up behind Nigeria, following victories over Egypt and Zambia.

Swedish head coach Kim Lars Bjärkegren, who assumed his role in February, is leading the team's preparations. Under his management, the squad has demonstrated improved defensive structure and chance creation, although clinical finishing remains a challenge for the side.

Winning this knockout fixture will guarantee a place in the semi-finals, where the victor will play either Morocco or South Africa. A successful result would keep Ghana's pursuit of a maiden WAFCON title active.

The national team has previously finished as runners-up in 1998, 2002, and 2006. Most recently, they secured a bronze medal during the 2025 tournament.
