Illimbek Akylbek Uulu wins controversial semifinal via decision

Illimbek Akylbek Uulu secured a decision victory over Xavier Franklin in a controversial semifinal bout during Episode 10 of The Ultimate Fighter 34. The bantamweight matchup featured two members of Team Bisping, with coach Michael Bisping opting for general coaching rather than specific game plans to maintain fairness between his fighters.

The contest began with Franklin utilizing his jab and switching stances. Illimbek gained an advantage two minutes into the first round with a takedown, eventually securing a body triangle before the bell. In the second round, the intensity increased as Illimbek landed a knee and a foot stomp while on his opponent's back. The round ended with the fighters clinching against the fence before referee Herb Dean separated them.

Franklin entered the third round needing a stoppage to win. While he successfully stuffed early takedown attempts, he eventually found success with striking that caused visible damage to Illimbek's face. As the final minute approached, Franklin landed a body shot that prompted Illimbek to signal an eye poke. Although Franklin continued his attack, the referee called for a video review.

The official ruling determined an eye poke had occurred, leading to a restart of the fight. This decision proved pivotal as Franklin attempted to follow up with more body shots, but Illimbek managed to secure a final takedown. Following the restart and the subsequent action, the judges awarded the win to Illimbek Akylbek Uulu.

The decision drew criticism from both coaches, Michael Bisping and Daniel Cormier, who suggested the fight should not have been restarted under the rule to protect oneself at all times. Despite the result, Franklin stated after the bout that he did not feel as though he had lost. The tournament moves forward to the next strawweight semifinal between Delphine Benouaich and Tina Black.
