Inyathi sports tournament opens with nine teams at Mahlabathini

The Councillor Ignatious Khabo Sports Tournament has begun in Inyathi, bringing together five football and four netball teams at Mahlabathini Groups.

The Councillor Ignatious Khabo Sports Tournament began at Mahlabathini Groups in Ward 8, Inyathi, with nine teams taking part. The programme includes five football sides and four netball teams, bringing together participants from sport, healthcare and correctional services.

The event is backed by US$5,000 in sponsorship. Of that amount, US$3,800 will go towards prize money and team kits, while football and netball equipment is also included in the support package.

The participating football teams are Mahlabathini FC, Mahlabathini United, Best FC, Inyathi Hospital FC and Inyathi Prison FC. The five sides represent the football section of the tournament, while four other teams will compete in netball.

The teams were drawn from the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service, professionals at Inyathi District Hospital and young people from Ward 8. The tournament therefore brings together members of local institutions and residents from the host community.

Organisers have also provided for the officials running the competition. Referees assigned to the football matches and umpires handling the netball games will be paid as part of the tournament arrangements.

Refreshments will be available for all nine teams, and footballs will be provided during the event. The opening at Mahlabathini Groups marks the start of a community sports programme combining football and netball under the Councillor Ignatious Khabo name.
