Kenya and Namibia reach U20 Barthes Trophy final after semi-final wins

Kenya defeated Zimbabwe 35-23 and Namibia beat Tunisia 11-6 to set up a final where both sides chase a record fourth U20 Barthes Trophy title.

Kenya and Namibia will compete in the 2026 Rugby Africa U20 Barthes Trophy final on Tuesday. Kenya secured their place with a 35-23 victory over Zimbabwe, while Namibia defeated Tunisia 11-6 in the other semi-final.

Both finalists are aiming for a record fourth title and a spot in the World Rugby Junior Trophy. Kenya, who finished as runners-up last year, used five tries to overcome a Zimbabwe side that struggled with unforced errors and missed opportunities.

Kenya held a 23-6 lead at halftime following tries from Brian Kiptanui and Rayvon Amunga, alongside the kicking of Faran Juma. Zimbabwe's Connor Lovatt contributed two penalties to keep the score close before the break. In the second half, Vimbiso Kasvosve scored a try from a rolling maul for Zimbabwe, but Kenya responded with tries from Michael Andale, Jibril Lugonzo, and Dennis Livoi. Michael Chimedza scored a final try for Zimbabwe in the closing moments of the match.

Namibia's path to the final involved overcoming a halftime deficit against Tunisia at Muteesa II Stadium in Kampala. Tunisia led 6-0 at the interval through penalties from Mohamed Afli, following a dominant first-half performance by their forward pack. Namibia regained control in the second half through a penalty from Mc-Rein Van Wyk and a try from substitute Nzola Nkunku.

Van Wyk eventually secured the 11-6 win for the defending champions with a drop goal. The result sets up a final between the two most successful teams in the competition as they pursue their fourth championship.
