League of African Ambassadors turns to golf for diplomacy and ties

The League of African Ambassadors will stage a two-day golf tournament this weekend, using the event to strengthen diplomatic ties, professional networks and friendships. The gathering is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the Ibom Golf & Country Club in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Organisers have removed the fundraising element that was previously planned for the tournament. The decision followed a resolution by the League’s executive board, which wants the event to concentrate on golf and the informal relationships that can develop through the sport.

The tournament will retain its competitive character while serving as a social meeting point. Ambassadors, diplomats, government officials, business leaders and other friends of Africa are expected to participate, creating an opportunity for interaction away from formal diplomatic settings.

Ben Okoyen, chairman of the Nigeria Golf Tournament Planning Committee, presented the tournament’s official goodie bag and souvenirs to retired Lieutenant General Tukur Y. Buratai during a courtesy visit. Buratai is a former Chief of Army Staff and sits on the League’s board of trustees.

The visit also highlighted Buratai’s importance to the organisation and his role in bringing members of the continent’s diplomatic community together. The organisers said they were honoured to hold the tournament during his tenure.

With the money-raising objective removed, the event is being positioned around golf’s ability to bring different groups together in a relaxed environment. Competition on the course will sit alongside informal meetings and social interaction at the Uyo club, with the League seeking stronger cooperation among its participants.
