London submits final bid to host 2029 World Athletics Championships
A joint venture between UK Athletics, London Marathon Events, and the Great Run Company has formally lodged a bid to host the 2029 championships.
London has officially submitted its final documentation to World Athletics to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships. The bid is being managed by a joint venture consisting of the Great Run Company, London Marathon Events, and UK Athletics.
The organizers intend to stage the championships at the London Stadium, the venue originally constructed for the 2012 Olympic Games. West Ham United has agreed to allow athletics to take place at the stadium in September 2029, despite the event coinciding with the football season.
West Ham United stated that negotiations involved stadium operators, government officials, and football governing bodies. The club noted that its primary concern is its supporters and ensuring the football schedule faces minimal disruption. Any specific impact on fixtures will be determined once the club's division and competition schedule for the 2029/30 season are confirmed.
Jack Buckner, CEO of UK Athletics and co-founder of Athletic Ventures, noted that using the stadium aligns with the UK's Olympic legacy strategy. He acknowledged support from UK Sport, the Mayor of London, and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Terms regarding the use of the venue have been settled with both West Ham United and the London Stadium.
Paul Foster, CEO of the Great Run Company, highlighted London's history of hosting major events such as the 2017 World Championships and the London Diamond League. Hugh Brasher, CEO of London Marathon Events, indicated that the bid includes mass-participation events across the UK. He suggested the championships could provide over £400 million in social and economic benefits.
Esther Britten of UK Sport stated that hosting the event would strengthen the UK's status as a major sporting host. World Athletics is expected to announce the chosen host city in September.
