Messi fuels GOAT debate with three-word message after retirement

Lionel Messi has reignited the long-running debate over football’s greatest player after a sponsored video appeared to end with the message “GOAT DEBATE SETTLED”. The phrase came shortly after the Argentina captain announced his retirement from international football.

The video, posted on Instagram as part of a paid partnership with Michelob ULTRA, showed a receipt-like list of Messi’s career achievements. The scrolling display referenced the trophies, records and honours he has collected during more than two decades at the top level.

The final three words drew the strongest attention because of Messi’s enduring rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo. The Argentine and Portuguese forwards spent much of their careers being compared for individual awards, goals and influence, while together collecting 13 Ballon d’Or titles.

The wording does not establish that Messi personally wrote or approved the closing message. Sponsored campaigns are commonly shaped by marketing teams, and the phrase may have been created as part of the advertisement rather than as a direct declaration from the player.

Messi’s international retirement announcement followed a 1-0 defeat by Spain in the 2026 World Cup final at MetLife Stadium. It came just over a month after the match and after the death of his father, Jorge, in the weeks that followed the loss.

Ronaldo also entered the conversation after Messi’s announcement. The Al-Nassr forward posted training photographs with the caption “Keep pushing”, a message that was viewed as cryptic in the context of his rival’s decision to leave international football.

Messi and Ronaldo’s competition has defined much of the modern era, but the latest exchange came from very different circumstances. Messi’s post was tied to a commercial campaign and retirement announcement, while Ronaldo’s response consisted of training images and three words.
