Mette explains Tusker FC's 3-1 FKF Super Cup win over Gor Mahia

Tusker FC defeated Gor Mahia 3-1 in the FKF Super Cup at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday, August 24. Francis Oduor, Eugene Ikutwa and Ian Simiyu scored for Tusker, while an own goal by Ikutwa supplied Gor Mahia’s one goal.

Tusker coach Julien Mette viewed the victory as a strong opening statement from his team. He considered Gor a serious opponent rather than a side still working through a low-pressure pre-season match, particularly after the Kenyan champions had reached the CECAFA Kagame Cup final.

Mette’s assessment centred on Tusker’s efficiency in attack and discipline without the ball. The Brewers created enough chances to score three times, then stayed organised when Gor Mahia increased the pressure after the interval. Their defensive structure denied the comeback the champions were seeking.

The French coach also highlighted Tusker’s handling of the match’s changing phases. He was satisfied with the players’ decision-making, execution and composure, saying those elements showed progress in the squad’s tactical, technical and mental development.

Gor Mahia had finished first in the 2025 FKF Premier League with 69 points from 34 matches, recording 20 wins, nine draws and five defeats. Their recent sequence had produced two wins, two losses and one draw, including a 3-1 victory at Murang’a SEAL before the Super Cup defeat. Gor’s next league fixture is against Murang’a SEAL on August 29, 2026.

Mette was also encouraged by the contribution of Tusker’s new signings. He said the newcomers had adapted positively to the squad’s demands, giving the coaching staff more options as the new season approaches. The 3-1 result therefore gave Tusker both a trophy success and evidence that the new group can execute its plans against established opposition.
