Mikel Obi suggests Chelsea sign James Trafford to replace Sanchez
Former Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi has urged the club to replace Robert Sanchez with Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford to improve trophy prospects.
Mikel Obi has called on Chelsea to replace Robert Sanchez with Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford. Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, the former Chelsea player argued that Sanchez lacks the reliability and consistency required to win trophies.
Obi stated that Sanchez is not the player capable of helping the club secure silverware. He noted that the goalkeeper has made numerous mistakes and suggested that both the club and manager Xabi Alonso are aware of the issue. The former Nigerian international claimed that Chelsea fans are also demanding improvements in the goalkeeping position.
While Chelsea have been active in the transfer market under Alonso, the goalkeeper position remains a weakness. The club recently completed a £117 million deal for Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers. They have also added veteran players Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson to the squad. Additionally, the club expects to confirm the signing of left-back Pep Chavarria following the move of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid.
James Trafford is a 23-year-old English goalkeeper currently at Manchester City. His market value is estimated at €25,000,000. Trafford moved from Burnley to Manchester City for €31.20 million during the 25/26 season, following a previous move from Manchester City to Burnley for €17.30 million in the 23/24 season.
Trafford's career progression includes moving from Bolton to the Manchester City U21 side in the 22/23 season before being promoted to the senior squad in the 23/24 season. He is currently listed as ill.
