Military High Command receives 2026 Democracy Cup trophy in Kumasi

The Military High Command has received the 2026 Democracy Cup trophy ahead of Friday’s meeting between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko at Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi. The presentation forms part of Parliament’s preparations for the third edition of the competition.

A delegation headed by Parliament Clerk Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror took the trophy to the Military High Command at Burma Camp on Monday. Former Ghana captain John Mensah, who serves as an ambassador for the Democracy Cup, was also involved in the visit.

The delegation invited the Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, and the Ghana Armed Forces to take part in Friday’s programme. The competition uses football to support the promotion of democratic governance, and the trophy tour is intended to build backing for the event in Kumasi.

Lieutenant General Agyapong pledged the Ghana Armed Forces’ participation. He said the military remained committed to Ghana’s Constitution, the country’s territorial integrity and the democratic process, while confirming that military personnel would attend the game.

The Chief of Defence Staff added that members of the armed forces would attend as ordinary spectators rather than in uniform. He also welcomed the decision to include the Ghana Armed Forces in the trophy tour and the wider Democracy Cup initiative.

Friday’s match gives Hearts and Kotoko another contest for local bragging rights. Kotoko won the first edition against Hearts, but Hearts are the current holders after defeating Great Olympics in last year’s edition. The headline fixture will follow other activities, including a match between Parliamentary XI and Judiciary XI sides.
