Rodri faces choice between Real Madrid and Barcelona amid contract uncertainty

Manchester City midfielder Rodri faces a significant decision regarding his future as he enters the final year of his contract at Etihad Stadium. The 30-year-old has not yet signed a new agreement with the club. While Real Madrid have maintained a long-term interest in the midfielder, Barcelona have received approval to begin negotiations with Manchester City.

Barcelona officials noted that while a deal is not guaranteed, the development is significant. Rodri is currently recovering from back surgery and has not joined his teammates on their pre-season tour in the Far East. He is expected to address his future following the conclusion of the recent World Cup, where he won the Ballon d'Or and led Spain to their second title as the tournament's best player.

His recent seasons have been impacted by physical challenges, including a serious knee injury during the 2024-25 campaign and hamstring issues in the previous season. Since joining City in 2019, he has secured four Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy, and two FA Cups. Manchester City have indicated they are counting on his presence for the upcoming season, though they would require a substantial fee to permit a sale.

A move to Barcelona would reunite Rodri with Spanish internationals Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Pau Cubarsi, and Ferran Torres. Alternatively, a transfer to Real Madrid would allow him to play under Jose Mourinho and reunite with former City teammate Bernardo Silva. His history with Atletico Madrid and previous comments regarding the prestige of Real Madrid could influence how he is received at the Nou Camp.

Losing the midfielder would leave a void in the City squad following the departure of Silva. The club would look to Mateo Kovacic, Nico Gonzalez, or Tijjani Reijnders to fill the role, all of whom have participated in pre-season training. While club record signing Elliot Anderson is expected to start, City are also in discussions to sign 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille.
