Sarfo Duku backs Eric Tinkler to improve Asante Kotoko discipline

Former Asante Kotoko Communications Director Sarfo Duku has expressed support for the club's appointment of South African coach Eric Tinkler. Duku believes the arrival of an expatriate coach will help the Porcupine Warriors address ongoing disciplinary issues and improve player management.

Speaking on Nhyira FM, Duku noted that he had previously campaigned for the club to hire international figures for its key technical positions. He stated that he is satisfied with the selection of both the new director of football and Tinkler to lead the team.

The former administrator suggested that foreign coaches are better equipped to maintain authority because they are less influenced by local cultural expectations or personal ties. He argued that local coaches often struggle to make firm decisions due to familiarity with the players.

Duku highlighted that previous friction between the technical staff and the playing squad necessitated a change in leadership. He believes Tinkler can transform the mentality and attitude of the players to resolve these internal challenges.

Addressing recruitment, Duku criticized the practice of allowing coaches to sign players with whom they have existing relationships. He noted that this approach can make it difficult to maintain a competitive environment within the squad.

Tinkler takes charge of Asante Kotoko ahead of the 2026/27 season. His first match in the Ghana Premier League will be a home game against newly promoted Debibi United as the club seeks to improve upon its previous season.
