Southampton issue safety warnings ahead of Middlesbrough play-off

Southampton FC has issued a formal reminder to supporters regarding stadium conduct ahead of Tuesday night's Sky Bet Championship play-off semi-final second leg against Middlesbrough at St Mary’s.

The club has strictly prohibited the use of pyrotechnics and any attempts to enter the pitch during the fixture. This includes the use of flares, smoke bombs, or other similar devices both inside and outside the stadium. Supporters are expected to remain in their seats until the final whistle has blown.

These measures follow heavy sanctions from the FA after the 2024 play-off fixture against West Bromwich Albion. During that match, supporters entered the field of play and utilized pyrotechnics before and during the game. The club noted that resources would be better spent on the playing squad and infrastructure rather than addressing such incidents.

Officials from the EFL and other relevant authorities will be present at St Mary’s on Tuesday. The club stated that pitch incursions are illegal and can lead to prosecution, arrest, and bans from the club. Possession or use of pyrotechnics is also classified as a criminal offence.

Players and staff intend to show their appreciation to the fans after the match regardless of the outcome. However, the club emphasized that this can only occur if the pitch remains safe and clear of spectators. Supporters are encouraged to support the team from the stands to maintain the atmosphere at the stadium.
