Taiwo Awoniyi set to join Frank Onyeka at Coventry City in 2026

Taiwo Awoniyi is undergoing a medical ahead of his move from Nottingham Forest to Coventry City, where he will join fellow Nigerian Frank Onyeka.

Taiwo Awoniyi leaves Nottingham Forest with 23 goals from 103 competitive appearances. The Nigeria striker is undergoing a medical ahead of a move to newly promoted Premier League club Coventry City, where he is set to work under Frank Lampard and join fellow Super Eagles international Frank Onyeka.

Coventry and Forest have reached an agreement for Awoniyi’s permanent transfer, with the player expected to sign a long-term contract once the medical process is completed. The move would end his four-year spell at the City Ground, which began after his arrival from Union Berlin in July 2022.

Awoniyi scored 21 Premier League goals for Forest and made 90 appearances in the competition. He also registered six assists across his time at the club. His record was affected by recurring injury problems, which limited his ability to maintain a regular run in the team.

The 2025/26 season was particularly difficult for the forward. He scored four league goals and supplied one assist in 17 appearances, while Forest initially left him out of their Europa League squad. He later returned to the Premier League group after Ola Aina suffered an injury, but remained behind Igor Jesus and Chris Wood in the attacking order.

Lampard is adding Awoniyi as Coventry prepare for their first Premier League campaign since winning the 2025/26 Championship title. The manager took charge in November 2024 and guided the club back to the top flight after a 25-year absence. His contract has since been extended until 2029.

Awoniyi will reunite with Onyeka, who moved to Coventry from Brentford initially on loan in February 2026. After helping the club win the Championship, the midfielder’s transfer became permanent in June. Awoniyi was a member of Nigeria’s 2013 FIFA Under-17 World Cup-winning squad and previously developed at Liverpool.
