Top Rank faces dilemma over Navarrete versus Zepeda matchup

William Zepeda secured the vacant WBC lightweight title with a unanimous decision victory over Lamont Roach. During the bout, Zepeda maintained a high work rate, landing 218 of his 884 total punches. This performance has led to discussions regarding a potential fight between Zepeda and Emanuel Navarrete.

Terence Crawford described a potential matchup between the two as a bloodbath. Crawford suggested that such a contest would be highly dangerous for the fighters involved. The prospect of Navarrete moving up to the 135-pound division to face Zepeda presents a significant challenge for Top Rank.

Navarrete's previous attempt at the lightweight division in May 2024 resulted in a split decision loss to Denys Berinchyk for the vacant WBO belt. In that fight, Navarrete struggled to establish his rhythm against the Ukrainian. He currently holds the IBF and WBO titles at 130 pounds, where a unification fight against WBC champion O’Shaquie Foster is a possibility.

Zepeda's style relies on constant pressure and high volume, which he used to dictate the pace against Roach for all 12 rounds. This presents a different tactical problem than Navarrete's previous lightweight opponent. While Navarrete is willing to trade punches, Zepeda's ability to sustain output may force him into a high-risk situation.

Top Rank has alternative options for Zepeda within the lightweight division. WBO champion Abdullah Mason was present for Zepeda's recent victory and is considered a candidate for a unification bout. Choosing Mason would allow Zepeda to fight without requiring Navarrete to move up in weight following his recent struggles at 135 pounds.
