Trent Alexander-Arnold explains England's 2026 World Cup snub
The Real Madrid defender says he was angry and devastated after England left him out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.
Trent Alexander-Arnold has described his exclusion from England’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad as deeply painful, saying he was angry after learning that he would not travel to North America. The Real Madrid defender had continued to hope for selection until the England management delivered the decision by phone.
Alexander-Arnold had made no arrangements for his summer because he believed he still had a chance of joining the squad. The omission was especially difficult because of his desire to represent England at the World Cup and his expectation that he would be involved in the team’s plans.
His absence followed a difficult first season in Spain after leaving Liverpool for Real Madrid. He did not establish himself among Thomas Tuchel’s preferred right-back choices, while limited involvement under the England manager had also raised questions about his international future.
The right-back position became a significant issue during the tournament as injuries and suspensions forced Tuchel to alter his defensive options. England still reached the semi-finals, but Alexander-Arnold’s non-selection continued to draw attention from supporters and pundits.
Despite the disappointment, the defender has not withdrawn from international football. He believes his desire to play for England meets the standard Tuchel expects from players seeking selection and remains committed to the national team.
Alexander-Arnold’s position is that his England career remains active even when he is not chosen. He intends to continue representing the country if selected and says that commitment will remain until he ends his playing career.
