Triangle face seven-match fight to survive in Castle Lager PSL

Triangle’s fight to remain in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League has been reduced to seven matches, with the Lowveld club sitting last on 18 points. They need to reach 38 points, a total that has traditionally been enough for survival, meaning 20 more points are required before the season ends.

That target leaves Triangle with little room for error. They would need to win all seven remaining fixtures and rely on favourable results in other matches to avoid relegation. Their immediate challenge is a home game against Highlanders, followed by an away trip to Bulawayo Chiefs.

Triangle will then host Dynamos before travelling to MWOS. Simba Bhora are next at home, while the final two fixtures will take them to former champions FC Platinum and then into an away meeting with defending champions Scottland.

Genesis Mangombe returned to the club last month in another attempt to steer them away from relegation. He was brought back after helping Triangle survive the drop last season, when the club also reached the Chibuku Super Cup final before losing 1-0 to Dynamos.

The current assignment is more demanding than last season’s rescue effort. Mangombe has also previously coached Dynamos and Yadah, and now faces a schedule that includes several difficult opponents before the campaign closes.

Triangle’s 2-0 victory over TelOne has given the coach a recent performance to build on. Mangombe said the team must concentrate on each upcoming assignment, avoid dropping points and improve its chances of survival. If Triangle complete the escape, the club’s seven-game run would stand among the most notable relegation recoveries in Zimbabwean football.
