UAE Pro League: Why Anthony Dennis could snub Super Eagles

Anthony Dennis has completed his move from Turkish club Göztepe to Al Jazira in the UAE Pro League. The 22-year-old Nigerian midfielder has signed an initial three-year contract with the Abu Dhabi club, which paid €5 million for his services. Al Jazira announced that Dennis would be registered as a “resident player”, a status that carries important consequences for both his club role and his international future.

The transfer ends a period of uncertainty around Dennis, whose future had attracted interest since last year. Earlier offers did not meet Göztepe’s valuation, preventing a deal from being completed. Al Jazira moved quickly when it entered the negotiations and agreed to the €5m fee. The move also brings a major financial change, with Dennis expected to earn more than 40 times his previous salary at Göztepe.

Al Jazira’s decision to register Dennis as a resident player allows the club to use a foreign-born footballer without occupying one of its limited foreign-player places. The arrangement applies to non-citizens who live legally in the UAE under the league’s domestic registration provisions. Players must be over 18 and must not have represented another country’s senior national team in an official international competition.

Dennis fits those conditions on the information available. Although he has previously been invited into the Super Eagles set-up, he has never played for Nigeria in a senior international match. That distinction makes the resident-player registration possible and leaves his international eligibility open. It also creates a different set of choices for a player who has yet to make his senior debut for Nigeria.

His route to the UAE began in Abuja. Dennis joined Göztepe from HB Academy Abuja in January 2023 and initially played for the Turkish club’s under-19 team. He made his professional debut in a 1-1 TFF First League draw against Çorum on January 27, 2024. He was then promoted to the senior side and became part of the group that helped Göztepe secure promotion to the Turkish Süper Lig for the 2024-25 season.

Göztepe rewarded that progress with a contract extension in May 2024 that was due to keep him at the club until 2027. He finished his time in Turkey with five goals and two assists in 83 appearances across all competitions. Those figures include his development from academy football into the senior team and his contribution during Göztepe’s rise to the top division.

The immediate question is whether the move will bring Dennis closer to the Super Eagles or make that route less likely. A place in the UAE Pro League gives him a new platform and a stronger financial position, but the attention surrounding Nigeria’s national team remains tied to senior-level performances and selection. If he is not called up, the absence could become significant because he is not yet tied to Nigeria by an official senior appearance.

The UAE has previously used naturalisation to add players developed or established in its domestic league. FIFA eligibility rules allow a player to represent an adopted country after acquiring citizenship, subject to the applicable requirements. One reported pathway requires five years of continuous residency. Dennis’s contract is initially three years, so an extension could theoretically keep him in the UAE long enough to reach that threshold. At 22, he would be 27 if that route were completed, but any change of allegiance would depend on the relevant residency, citizenship and football eligibility decisions.

For now, Dennis begins with the task of establishing himself at Al Jazira and adapting to a new league. The club expects him to play an important role as it pursues the UAE top-flight title. His performances will determine his standing in Abu Dhabi, while Nigeria’s interest will determine whether the Super Eagles remain his clear international destination. The transfer has therefore changed more than his club address: it has left both national-team options open.
