Uganda targets global tourism via 2026 Rwenzori Marathon

The Ugandan government is using the upcoming Rwenzori Marathon to promote the country as a destination for investment and tourism. Scheduled for Saturday, 22 August 2026, the event is projected to attract more than 10 million viewers globally. Participants from approximately 45 different countries are expected to gather in Kasese for the race.

During a parliamentary session on Thursday, 14 August 2026, the Minister of State for Education and Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, stated that the marathon serves as a platform for identifying talent and showcasing regional enterprise. To support the event, the government has provided Shs3.7 billion through the National Council of Sports. This funding is primarily intended for the prize purse to ensure the participation of competitive runners.

The marathon has seen consistent expansion. Last year, the event drew 18,000 visitors from 36 nations and 6,000 runners, with 21 percent of those athletes coming from outside Uganda. Hon. Peter Ogwang noted that the event could help restore the long-distance running heritage in Kasese, which had diminished following the insurgency in the early 2000s and a lack of talent identification structures.

While officials praised the event's growth, local leaders raised concerns regarding infrastructure. Kasese District Woman MP, Hon. Sarah Itungo Masereka, noted that the region lacks sufficient hotel capacity for the increasing number of visitors and requested investment in facilities for athletes. The Minister of State for Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Hon. Suzan Nakawuki, suggested that residents could address the accommodation shortage by converting homes into rental spaces.

Other members of Parliament discussed the broader implications of the race. Kasese Municipality MP, Hon. Ferigo Kambale, described the marathon as a world-label event that has placed Uganda on the international stage. Meanwhile, the Shadow Minister for Education, Hon. Bulasio Zambaali, requested details on security, ambulance services, and traffic management to prepare for the influx of people.
