Usyk vs Wilder fight threatens heavyweight lineal title history

The heavyweight boxing lineage, which has spanned over 140 years and included 40 recognized champions, faces a period of uncertainty. A proposed final career fight between Oleksandr Usyk and Deontay Wilder could end the traditional continuity of the lineal championship.

The principle of the lineal title relies on the concept of beating the man who holds the crown. If Deontay Wilder defeats Usyk, he would become the 41st man in the lineage that began with John L. Sullivan in 1885. Despite three previous attempts against Tyson Fury, Wilder has never held the lineal crown, but a victory over Usyk would secure it.

However, a victory for Usyk presents a different challenge for the sport. If Usyk wins and subsequently retires, the lineage could be left in a state of permanent vacancy. This risk is heightened by the increasing fragmentation of heavyweight boxing, with Zuffa Boxing intending to crown its own champion. This could lead to a landscape where The Ring, Zuffa, and the established sanctioning bodies like the WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO operate through separate structures.

History shows that retirements have interrupted the lineage in the past. Following the retirement of Lennox Lewis, The Ring recognized Vitali Klitschko as champion after he beat Corrie Sanders in 2004. This eventually led to a new lineage that included Wladimir Klitschko before Tyson Fury's victory in 2015, which eventually paved the way for Usyk.

Unlike sanctioning body titles, the lineal championship does not require physical belts, mandatory challengers, or fees. It exists solely through the recognition of the top fighter in the division. If the sport remains divided among competing championship structures, identifying a single fighter to restore the lineage may become impossible, potentially validating claims that the title is merely a myth.
