Werder Bremen do not regret Boniface loan despite injury-hit spell

Werder Bremen have no regrets over signing Victor Boniface on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, despite the Nigerian striker’s injury-disrupted spell at the Bundesliga club. Boniface played 11 matches in all competitions and supplied two assists during his time in Bremen.

The forward struggled to establish a rhythm after recurring knee problems limited his availability. His season ended as a difficult one for the club and player, with the injuries preventing him from making a sustained contribution to Bremen’s campaign.

Werder’s managing director of professional football, Clemens Fritz, said the club knew about Boniface’s knee issue before completing the deal. However, the possibility of further injury and the need for surgery had not been anticipated.

Fritz explained that Bremen needed another striker and had little room in their budget when Boniface became available at short notice. The club therefore considered the agreement a calculated and financially manageable risk while trying to strengthen its attack.

Despite Boniface’s limited involvement, Bremen also valued his conduct away from the pitch. Fritz described the forward as a sensible professional who caused no problems within the dressing room, which reinforced the club’s view that the loan was not a mistake.

Boniface has now returned to Bayer Leverkusen after his difficult season in Bremen. He will look to regain his form with the German champions after a campaign in which fitness problems restricted him to a supporting role and left his impact largely limited to two assists.
