Western Cape launches free online course for export business skills

The Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism has introduced a free online course to help local businesses enter international markets.

The Western Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism (DEDAT) has introduced a free online export course to assist businesses in entering global markets. This initiative is a partnership with the International Trade Institute of Southern Africa (ITISA) and supports the Western Cape Government's Growth for Jobs Strategy. The strategy aims to foster economic expansion, increase market access, and generate lasting employment.

To date, 518 participants have registered for the self-paced programme. More than 70 individuals have finished the course, with several moving on to utilize further export support services provided by the provincial government. The curriculum consists of nine modules designed to guide users through the complexities of international trade.

Dr Ivan Meyer, the Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism, stated that export growth is a primary method for stimulating economic development and job creation. He noted that the course provides entrepreneurs with the practical skills required to expand their customer bases and support the province's export-led growth goals.

The training covers essential aspects of the export process, including logistics, customs procedures, tariff classification, and compliance requirements. It also provides guidance on documentation and the development of effective export strategies through the use of real-world case studies and expert advice.

Local entrepreneurs have already reported practical applications of the training. Alicia Somdaka, CEO of Imbali Nature's Crown, used the course to understand compliance and documentation. Following the programme, she updated her product labels to meet international standards and is preparing to target markets in the Middle East and Europe.

Other participants, such as Sandiswa Masimini, noted that the course improved their efficiency and confidence in managing export operations. The programme is designed to help business owners and export managers navigate the technical requirements of international trade.
